After yesterday's 11-miler with Harold (my dog), I thought that today's 90-minute hike in Black Creek Park would be a needed stand-down.
Not so according to Mother Nature who, after a 6 - 8" blizzard, left the trail in a freshly, fallen shroud of snow. I didn't need to take it easy anyway.

One Week To Go
March 29th, 2014
Today may have been my last real practice hike. I did 11 miles (with Harold), basically the northeast quadrant of the city.
We headed down University Ave to St Paul, thence north to Scrantom where we made a short change to the El Camino trail to Ridge Road with a turn to the east to Culver Rd, then south to Atlantic and home. Total time was just a little over 4 hours including a short stop for a lunch.
The most interesting part was how the hike started:
That may be what this whole adventure will be about.

The most interesting part was how the hike started:
- my camel back did not provide water
- I lost a small plug that I need
- Harold escaped out of the harness.

Now Hiking to Work to Practice
March 24th, 2014
The weather is not really cooperating for my training; still snowy, windy and cold here in Rochester NY. I could almost be training for the Camino Frances (Pyrenees Mountains) instead of the Via De La Plata. ;<)
Today I hiked to work (5 miles). Harold and I started off from the apartment and made it over to Dogs At Play which was the end point for him.
I continued on, crossing Clinton, down Mt Hope to Genesee River Way Trail (east side) and along to the UofR. Made it all in about 1 and 3/4 hours.
I had an additional six lbs in the pack and it made a difference. I was tired when I got to work. Anyway now it is time to repeat the process, but head home.

Practicing blogging with my tablet
March 16th, 2014
At Starry Nights where I just finished my homework of translating 4 pages of 'La Socieded Juliette' in about an hour. Not exactly a speed record, but I am picking it up more often when confronted with the imperfect, the preterite and the conditional.
Not only detecting it, but providing a reasonable translation.
When it comes to conversation, as in english, people do not often talk this way, but it does help me explore complex sentence structure.

Physical Preparation
March 16th, 2014
I have been reading from various posts about how to prepare for hiking El Camino.
Many seemed to emphasize hiking long distances, and I suppose that makes sense in a way. But that strikes me as kind of repetitious.
I have decided on a whole-body approach. For the last months, my routine has been:
I am hoping that by focusing on the entire body, I will correct for any weak areas that would become apparent on the day-after-day grind of hiking 15 miles (on average) per day over a 3 week period.

- Monday evenings: 1 hour of movement yoga
- Tuesday lunch: weight training and stretching
- Wed morning or Wed evening: pilates or step aerobics
- Thursday lunch: weight training and stretching
- Friday: day off
- Saturday morning: pilates
- Sunday: hiking 5 - 7 miles

First Thoughts
March 5th, 2014
Well, the countdown is on. Today is March 5th and I leave on April 5th.
The other day I fully loaded my backpack and did three miles.
As soon as the weather clears, I will up the mileage significantly.
I also received my passport and credentials.
